Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean Coast is all about variety! The melange of cultures includes those that have been there for ages (BriBri Indians, Caribbean blacks brought in to work the Banana plantations and Latins) and newcomers (Europeans, Americans, South Americans and more). There's a wonderful variety of beaches from black sand to white, from calm snorkelling to surfing beaches that have bred champions so there's something for everyone. You'll find a huge variety of places to eat and tons of things to do in the area too!
Accommodations are spread out from the black beach area north of town to the smaller communities south of town such as Playa Cocles, Punta Uva, Playa Chiquita and Manzanillo. The most affordable places tend to be right in town, more luxurious resort style places a little further out. But the area is flat so ask about a bike rental to get back and forth.

Cahuita Hotels
Cahuita on the Caribbean Coast has the most "Caribbean" vibe of anywhere in Costa Rica with a laid-back rasta vibe. While Cahuita's tourist scene may have been overtaken by Puerto Viejo just South many travelers prefer the quieter scene here. And the town is located next to Cahuita National Park which has many opportunities for viewing wildlife both in the jungle and below the sea on a snorkeling trip.
Accommodations are either in town just North of the park or stretched along the black sand beach further North, all within an easy walk of the restaurants and bars in town.
